You may see numbers like 2700K or 4000K on light bulb boxes and LED fixture pages. This is the color temperature. It tells you if the light looks warm and golden or cool and bright. Choosing the right one can change how a room feels.
What does K mean?
K stands for Kelvin, the scale for the color of light. A lower number is warmer and more yellow. A higher number is cooler and more blue-white.
The main color temperatures
- 2700K (warm white): cozy and golden, similar to a classic bulb. Best for bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms.
- 3000K (soft white): slightly cleaner, still warm. A great all-round choice for kitchens, bathrooms and hallways.
- 4000K (neutral white): crisp and natural. Good for home offices, garages and task areas.
- 5000K to 6500K (daylight): very bright and cool. Best for workshops and utility spaces, and often too harsh for living areas.
Best choice by room
- Living room: 2700K to 3000K
- Dining room: 2700K, with a dimmer
- Bedroom: 2700K
- Kitchen: 3000K to 4000K
- Bathroom vanity: 3000K to 4000K
- Home office: 4000K
Try 3-color or tunable lights
Many modern LED fixtures let you switch between warm, neutral and cool light with a switch or remote. This is useful if you want bright light for cleaning or work and soft light for the evening.
Keep colors consistent
Mixing different color temperatures in the same room can look uneven. Try to keep all lights in one space within the same range.
Check the CRI too
CRI shows how true colors look under a light. A CRI of 90 or more is a good target for kitchens, bathrooms and any place where colors matter.
