Pendant Lights Over a Kitchen Island: Height, Spacing and Size Guide

Pendant lights over a kitchen island add style and bright, focused light where you chop, cook and gather. The trick is choosing the right size, spacing and height.

How high to hang island pendants

Hang the bottom of each pendant about 30 to 36 inches above the countertop. If you are tall or your ceiling is higher than 9 feet, move them up a few inches so they do not block your view.

How many pendants do you need?

  • Islands up to 4 feet long: 1 large or 2 small pendants
  • Islands 5 to 7 feet long: 2 pendants
  • Islands 8 feet or longer: 3 pendants

Odd numbers, like 3, often look balanced. Two larger pendants can look just as good on a medium island.

How far apart should they be?

Space pendants about 24 to 30 inches apart, measured from the center of one light to the center of the next. Keep the end lights at least 6 inches away from the island edge. Mark the positions on the ceiling with painter's tape before you install.

Choose the right size

Mini pendants are usually 6 to 10 inches wide. Medium styles are 10 to 16 inches. For a large island, a single linear light or a longer fixture can work better than many small lights.

Pick a style that suits your kitchen

  • Glass pendants: bright and light, good for small kitchens
  • Metal or black finishes: modern and bold
  • Crystal or cluster designs: glamorous for open living spaces
  • Rattan or woven shades: warm and relaxed

Lighting tips

  1. Use warm white bulbs around 2700K to 3000K for comfort.
  2. Add a dimmer so the island works for cooking and for entertaining.
  3. Do not forget under-cabinet lighting for task areas.
