Hanging a chandelier at the wrong height is one of the most common lighting mistakes. Too high and the light feels far away. Too low and it blocks views or gets bumped. Here is how to get it right.
The basic rule for dining tables
Hang the bottom of the chandelier about 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop. This keeps the light bright on the table while letting people see each other across it.
Adjust for your ceiling height
The 30 to 36 inch rule works well for a standard 8 foot ceiling. For taller ceilings, add about 3 inches for every extra foot of height.
- 8 foot ceiling: about 30 to 34 inches above the table
- 9 foot ceiling: about 33 to 37 inches above the table
- 10 foot ceiling: about 36 to 40 inches above the table
Other rooms and spaces
- Entryway or foyer: keep at least 7 feet from the floor to the bottom of the light in any walking path
- Living room: the same 7 foot clearance applies when the chandelier is not over a table
- Bedroom: aim for about 7 to 8 feet clearance so no one touches it when standing
- Two-story foyer: hang it so the middle of the fixture lines up with the second floor window or landing
Tips for a perfect result
- Mark the table center on the ceiling before installing.
- Measure from the tabletop, not from the floor, for a dining table.
- If the chain or cord is adjustable, install the light first and shorten it later to test the height.
- Ask a licensed electrician to check the ceiling box if the fixture is heavy.
Do not forget the bulbs
Clear bulbs and exposed LEDs can feel bright when seen straight on. If your chandelier hangs low, choose warm white bulbs around 2700K and add a dimmer for comfort.
