Good bathroom lighting makes shaving, makeup and daily routines easier. The best vanity lights give even, shadow-free light on your face. Here is how to choose them.
Choose the right type
- Vanity light bar: a horizontal light above the mirror, great for most bathrooms
- Side wall sconces: one on each side of the mirror, the best option for even light on the face
- Backlit or LED mirrors: soft, modern and clean looking
Size and width
A vanity light bar should be about 75 percent of the width of the mirror and should not be wider than the mirror. A 28 to 36 inch light often fits a single vanity. For a double vanity, use a longer bar or one light over each mirror.
Mounting height
- Above the mirror: about 75 to 80 inches from the floor, or a few inches above the mirror top
- Side sconces: place at about eye level, around 60 to 66 inches from the floor, and 28 to 36 inches apart
Check the safety rating
Bathrooms have moisture. Choose a fixture that is rated for damp locations. If it is inside a shower area or can get direct water, you need a wet-rated fixture.
Pick the right color temperature
For the vanity, a bulb or LED between 3000K and 4000K gives clean, natural looking light. Also look for a high CRI of 90 or more, so skin tones and makeup look true. Dimmable lights help for night use.
Match your bathroom finishes
- Chrome and nickel: bright and classic
- Matte black: modern and bold
- Gold and brass: warm and luxurious
Try to match your faucet, towel bars and cabinet pulls where possible, or mix two finishes on purpose.
